By the time I was ten years old I had lived in five countries. After school I traveled in the Himalayas before learning Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.  This led on to studying in China just as Chairman Mao died and the Cultural Revolution came to an  end with China taking new directions under Deng Xiao Ping. Some of my photographs from this period can be found here.  My subsequent business career took me to every continent except Antarctica. A camera often came too but it was only in 2011 that I decided to make Photography my main line of work. Not wanting to develop a business I nevertheless did want to continue my own personal development and to explore my own creative potential. It has been more challenging but also more rewarding than I ever imagined. I’d also like to document some of what I have learned over the last few years, insights gained, successes achieved and setbacks encountered. In doing so I hope this website can be helpful to people on similar or parallel paths.

To start with I attended a good many workshops.  In part these fulfilled a desire to travel and I ticked off places I had not been to - Death Valley in the USA, New Zealand, Antarctica and Namibia - whilst also learning a huge amount from instructors and fellow participants.  It was an important phase in my development. However, over time I found myself pointing my camera in other directions and now prefer to work and explore alone. In the links section I have included connections to many of the people from whom I have learned and whose advice, writing, guidance and insights have been of enormous help. Landscape and “Destination” photography has evolved to exploration of textures, patterns and shapes. Buildings and architecture and especially places of worship also captivate me. Travel for the sake of it seems less important though returning to certain places and exploring them more deeply has become important.

I hope there is a good balance between older and more recent work on this site.

My print “Dog, Lady, Snow” (right) is held in the permanent collection of the Falmouth Art Gallery in Cornwall and a number of generous people have bought my images for their private collections. in 2014 I was commissioned to provide a collection of framed prints for an office suite in central London. In 2018 I became an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society in the UK with a panel of images from Japan which can be seen here.
